Usage: Expresses that you only realized or understood something after a certain experience. The experience was necessary for the realization.
Examples:
病気になってはじめて、健康のありがたさがわかった。(Only after getting sick did I appreciate the value of health.)
日本に来てはじめて、日本語の難しさを知った。(Only after coming to Japan did I realize how difficult Japanese is.)
失ってはじめて、大切さに気づく。(You only realize something's importance after you've lost it.)
