Usage: Expresses doing two activities simultaneously over a period of time, where one is the main activity and the other is a secondary activity done alongside it. More formal and literary than ながら. The two activities are typically ongoing or habitual, not momentary.

Key difference from ながら:

• ながら = can be momentary or habitual, casual
• かたわら = long-term, habitual activities, formal/written

Examples:

彼女は会社で働くかたわら、大学院で研究を続けている。(While working at a company, she continues her research at graduate school.)

教師として教えるかたわら、小説を書いている。(While teaching as a teacher, he writes novels.)

育児のかたわら、ボランティア活動にも参加している。(While raising children, she also participates in volunteer activities.)
