Connection: Verb (plain form) / い-Adj / な-Adj (な) + ほど

Usage: Indicates degree or extent, often expressing that something reaches a remarkable or extreme level. Slightly more formal than くらい. Can be used for both positive and negative extremes.

Common patterns:

• 驚くほど = surprisingly / to a surprising degree
• 信じられないほど = unbelievably
• 涙が出るほど = to the point of tears

Examples:

驚くほど日本語が上手だ。(His Japanese is surprisingly good.)

声が出ないほど緊張した。(I was so nervous that I couldn't speak.)
