Connection: Verb (plain form) + 以上（は）

Usage: Expresses that since a certain situation exists or a decision has been made, a natural consequence or obligation follows. Very similar to 上は but slightly more common in everyday usage. The は is optional.

Similar expressions:

• 上は = same meaning, slightly more literary
• からには = emphasizes personal resolve

Examples:

約束した以上は、守らなければならない。(Since I made a promise, I must keep it.)

プロである以上、結果を出すべきだ。(As long as you are a professional, you should produce results.)

留学を決めた以上、全力で頑張るつもりだ。(Now that I've decided to study abroad, I intend to give it my all.)
