じゃない・ではない

[Negative copula: is not]

Connection: Noun/な-adjective + じゃない (casual) / ではありません (formal)

Negative form of だ/です. States that something is NOT something.

Politeness levels:

• Casual: じゃない → 学生じゃない (not a student)
• Polite: じゃないです / じゃありません → 学生じゃないです
• Formal: ではありません → 学生ではありません
• Written: ではない → 学生ではない

Past negative:

• Casual: じゃなかった
• Polite: じゃなかったです / ではありませんでした

Note: This is for nouns and な-adjectives only. い-adjectives use くない (e.g., 高くない).

Examples:

• これは私のじゃないです (This is not mine)
• 彼は学生じゃありません (He is not a student)
• 昨日は暇じゃなかったです (Yesterday I wasn't free)
