Connection: Verb dictionary form + ことができる/ことができます
How to form:
- Group 2: 食べる → 食べることができます (can eat)
- Group 1: 泳ぐ → 泳ぐことができます (can swim); 話す → 話すことができます (can speak)
- Irregular: する → することができます (can do); くる → くることができます (can come)
Negative: ことができない
- 漢字を読むことができません (I cannot read kanji)
ことができる vs potential form:
- ことができる is more formal/written: 日本語を話すことができます
- Potential form is more conversational: 日本語が話せます
- Both mean the same thing, but potential form is used more in daily speech.
Also used for rules/possibilities: ここで泳ぐことができます (You can swim here — it's allowed)
Examples:
- 自転車に乗ることができますか (Can you ride a bicycle?)
- 日本語で手紙を書くことができます (I can write letters in Japanese)
