[Change of state: become ~ / turn into ~]
Connection depends on word type:
- な-adjective: stem + になる: 静かになる (become quiet); 元気になる (become healthy)
- Noun: Noun + になる: 先生になる (become a teacher); 20歳になる (turn 20)
- い-adjective: drop い, add くなる: 暑い → 暑くなる (become hot); 高い → 高くなる (become expensive)
Conjugation of なる:
- Present: なる/なります
- Past: なった/なりました
- て-form: なって
になる vs にする:
- になる = change happens naturally/by itself (become)
- にする = someone makes it change (make into/decide on)
- 部屋が暖かくなった (The room became warm — natural)
- 部屋を暖かくした (I made the room warm — deliberate)
Examples:
- 日本語が上手になりましたね (Your Japanese has gotten good!)
- 春になると暖かくなります (When spring comes, it gets warm)
- 大人になったら何になりたいですか (What do you want to become when you grow up?)
