[Comparison: ~ is more ~ than ~]
Structure: B + より + A + のほうが + Adjective
Meaning: A is more [adjective] than B.
Examples by type:
- 電車のほうがバスより速いです (Trains are faster than buses)
- 夏より冬のほうが好きです (I like winter more than summer)
- 日本語のほうが英語より難しいです (Japanese is harder than English)
Shorter forms:
- Just より: バスより電車のほうが速い (more complete)
- Just ほうが: 電車のほうが速い (the train is faster — when comparison target is understood)
Asking comparisons: AとBと、どちらのほうが〜ですか
- 犬と猫と、どちらのほうが好きですか (Which do you like more, dogs or cats?)
- 答え: 犬のほうが好きです (I like dogs more)
Superlative (the most): Use 一番 instead:
- クラスで一番背が高いです (The tallest in the class)
Examples:
- 東京より大阪のほうが食べ物がおいしいと思います (I think Osaka has better food than Tokyo)
- 朝のほうが夜より涼しい (Mornings are cooler than nights)
