Conditional Form · Express 'if' and 'when' with ば and たら
The conditional form lets you express 'if' and 'when' in Japanese. The ば form shifts godan verbs to the え-row + ば, while たら is simply the た form + ら. Both express conditions but with different nuances.
Simplified heuristic — may be inaccurate for some irregular verbs
Example: 安ければ買います。(If it's cheap, I'll buy it.)

Express a general or hypothetical condition. The result is a natural consequence.
Structure: Verb ば form + result clause
Express 'when' or 'after' something happens, or a specific one-time condition.
Structure: Verb たら form + result clause
Express that as one thing increases, another does too. Uses ば form repeated with ほど.
Structure: Verb ば form + same verb dictionary form + ほど
A common way to make suggestions or ask for advice.
