Verb ない-form + で

[Without Doing / Please Don't]

Connection: Verb ない-form + で

This pattern has two main uses:

Use 1: Without doing X (do Y) Describes doing one action without doing another action first.

• 朝ご飯を食べないで学校に行った (I went to school without eating breakfast)
• 何も言わないで帰った (He left without saying anything)

Use 2: Please don't do X Polite request to not do something. Often with ください.

• 心配しないでください (Please don't worry)
• 忘れないでください (Please don't forget)

Formation:

• Group 1: 書く → 書かない → 書かないで
• Group 2: 食べる → 食べない → 食べないで
• Irregular: する → しない → しないで, 来る → 来ない → 来ないで

Comparison:

• なくて = expresses cause/reason (negative て-form)
• ないで = "without doing" or "please don't"
• ずに = formal written equivalent of ないで (meaning 1)

Examples: 靴を脱がないで家に入らないでください。(Please don't enter the house without taking off your shoes.) 誰にも相談しないで決めてしまった。(I decided without consulting anyone.) 遠慮しないで食べてください。(Please don't hesitate; eat up!)
