Verb stem + なさい

Connection: Verb stem (masu-stem) + なさい

A polite command form used by people in authority (parents, teachers) to children or subordinates. Softer than the imperative form but still carries a commanding tone.

Formation:

• Group 1: 書く → 書きます → 書き + なさい → 書きなさい
• Group 1: 急ぐ → 急ぎます → 急ぎ + なさい → 急ぎなさい
• Group 2: 食べる → 食べます → 食べ + なさい → 食べなさい
• Group 2: 起きる → 起きます → 起き + なさい → 起きなさい
• Irregular: する → します → し + なさい → しなさい
• Irregular: 来る → 来ます → 来 + なさい → 来なさい (きなさい)

Usage Notes:

• More polite than imperative form (書け), less polite than てください
• Common in parent-child, teacher-student relationships
• Can sound condescending if used to equals or superiors

Examples: 早く宿題をしなさい。(Do your homework quickly!) 静かにしなさい。(Be quiet!) ちゃんと野菜も食べなさい。(Eat your vegetables properly too!)
