Connection:

• Plain form + と言っていた: 来ると言っていた (said they would come)

How to form:

• Verb plain: 行くと言っていた (said they would go)
• i-Adj plain: 高いと言っていた (said it was expensive)
• na-Adj plain: 便利だと言っていた (said it was convenient)
• Noun plain: 学生だと言っていた (said they were a student)

Variations:

• と言った = said (simple past)
• と言っている = is saying / has said (present/ongoing)
• と言っていた = said / was saying (past)
• Casual: って言ってた (contracted form)
