Verb (nai-stem) + んばかり

[As if about to; almost; on the verge of]

Connection: Verb (nai-stem) + んばかり (する → せんばかり)

Usage: Describes a state that is so extreme it looks as though something is about to happen, even if it doesn't actually occur. The ん is the classical volitional/intentional form. Expressive and literary, used to vividly convey intensity or extremity.

Variations:

• んばかりに (adverbial): modifies a verb
• んばかりの + Noun (attributive): modifies a noun
• んばかりだ (predicate ending)

Common combinations:

• 溢れんばかりの (overflowing; brimming with)
• 張り裂けんばかりの (about to burst)
• 飛び出さんばかりに (as if about to leap out)

Examples:
