Expresses a change of state or ability that occurs naturally over time. Something that was not possible or habitual has become so (or vice versa with negative).

Formation:

• Positive: Verb dictionary form + ようになる

  • 話せるようになる (come to be able to speak)
  • 食べるようになる (come to eat / start eating)

• Negative: Verb ない-form + ようになる

  • 食べないようになる (come to not eat / stop eating)
  • 泣かないようになる (reach a point where [someone] doesn't cry)
