Connection: Place + に + Being + が + います
Usage: Describes the existence or presence of animate beings (people, animals, insects, fish).
Conjugation:
- Present affirmative: います
- Present negative: いません
- Past affirmative: いました
- Past negative: いませんでした
いる vs ある: いる = living, moving beings; ある = objects, plants, events.
- 部屋に猫がいます (There's a cat in the room)
- 部屋にテレビがあります (There's a TV in the room)
Also used for:
- Saying where someone is: 田中さんは会議室にいます (Tanaka is in the meeting room)
- Family/relationships: 兄弟がいますか (Do you have siblings?)
Examples:
- あそこに犬がいます (There's a dog over there)
- 誰かいますか (Is anyone there?)
