Usage: Used to acknowledge that the ideal or extreme degree cannot be reached, but that a lesser degree is still achieved or expected. Sets a high standard as reference and then presents a more realistic expectation. Often used to moderate expectations while still maintaining standards.

Examples:

ネイティブとまではいかないまでも、日常会話は問題なくできる。(Although not quite at a native level, everyday conversation is no problem.)

完璧とまではいかないまでも、かなり良い出来だ。(Although not quite perfect, it's quite well done.)

毎日とまではいかないまでも、週に三回は運動するようにしている。(Although not every day, I try to exercise three times a week.)
