あげる

[To Give (to someone)]

Connection:

• Noun + を + Person + に + あげる: プレゼントを友達にあげる (give a present to a friend)
• Direct object を, recipient に

The Giving Triad:

• あげる = I/we give to others (direction: away from speaker)
• くれる = others give to me/us (direction: toward speaker)
• もらう = I/we receive from others (focus on receiver)

Status rules:

• Use for giving to equal or lower status people
• For giving to superiors, use さしあげる (humble form)

Examples:

• 妹に本をあげました (I gave my younger sister a book)
• 友達に写真をあげるつもりです (I plan to give my friend a photo)
• 田中さんに花をあげました (I gave Tanaka-san flowers)
